I miss sports.
Times are tough, with many sports seasons still suspended, this quarantine has been a major bust.
The other day, in my hundredth Twitter scroll of the day, I came across this tweet:
I was instantly intrigued, who had won the NBA Championship the year I was born? Who had won the Super Bowl? Who had won the World Series?
I had no idea.
And because I have nothing but time these days, I decided to find out.
So, together, lets take a look at the year 1994 in sports.
But first a quick shout out to all my 1994 babies, we’re in our mid-twenties, just trying to make it in this life while living through a global pandemic. Who would have thought we’d be here?
And the Houston Rockets are the 1994 NBA Finals Champs!
The Rockets defeated the New York Knicks in Game 7. It was the first NBA Championship for the franchise but also Houston’s first championship in any major sports league that still existed. Major props to The Rockets for coming through for their city.
The NBA Finals in 1994 are probably best remembered by the slight interruption during Game 5…
OJ Simpson decided to take his White Ford Bronco for a RIDE.
NBC who was airing the NBA Finals decided to split screen Game 5 and OJ’s police chase. I mean. OJ Simpson was in a police chase? Who didn’t want to see that?!
Before the season was suspended, The Rockets were 6th in the NBA Western Conference and had a record of 40-24. Their two star players, James Harden and Russell Westbrook were doing what they do best.
The Lombardi Trophy goes to… The Dallas Cowboys!
In the 1994 Super Bowl the Dallas Cowboys beat the Buffalo Bills to win the Lombardi Trophy for the second year in a row, ouch! To this day, it is the only time that the same TWO teams met consecutively in the Super Bowl.
Dallas Cowboys legend, Emmitt Smith won the MVP trophy that year.
A quick shout out to my cousin BoRyan, who is a supporter of the blog and the biggest Dallas Cowboys fan I know, who is probably never going to let me forget the fact that the Cowboys won the Super Bowl the year I was born 😦
In other more exciting NFL news (at least for this Rams fan), in 1994, Los Angeles Rams cornerback, Robert Bailey, made the longest punt return in NFL history (103 yards) against the New Orleans Saints.
The Dallas Cowboys are still the Dallas Cowboys, hated by many and loved by many others, but you already knew that.
The 2019 season marked the first non-winning season since 2015 for the Cowboys.
The biggest headline is the firing of head coach Jason Garrett after the losing season.
New coach and some solid pick-ups during the 2020 NFL Draft, let’s cross our fingers that the NFL 2020 Season goes as planned so we can see what the Cowboys got.
And the winner of the 1994 World Series is… no one?
For only the second time in MLB history, a World Series was not played due to a strike by the MLB Players Association. The season was officially cancelled on September 14th, 1994.
How did I not know this already?!
Is there going to be a 2020 MLB Season? We freaking hope so.
On March 12th, 2020 the MLB announces that all remaining spring training games were cancelled, and the start of the regular season would be delayed by at least two weeks….
We are now in Mid-May and still no return day has been set and we still don’t know what the season is going to look like once it actually starts.
June 17th, 1994
A truly wild day for sports fans. On this day several important sports moments all occurred, some of them occurring simultaneously.
June 17th, 1994 was the infamous date of the wild police chase involving O. J. Simpson during Game 5 of the NBA Finals.
Legendary golfer, Arnold Palmer was also playing his Final round at the 1994 U.S. Open. (Quick props to a great golfer and the creator of one of my favorite go-to drinks.)
The 1994 FIFA world cup commenced on this day as well; it was the first time it was being hosted by the United States.
The 1994 FIFA World Cup ultimately went to Brazil and it was the first time that the WORLD Cup was decided on penalties.
Have a day, 1994!
There are many other important sports moments from 1994 that are not included in this article. Sports is one of America’s favorite past times and moments like these are why we continue to watch.
Hopefully in the time where sports are on pause, this article is able to give you a little sports entertainment during yet another quarantine weekend.
